Why It’s Possible For Everyone To Find A Silver Lining

Standard

This post is inspired by a recent BuzzFeed article (http://www.buzzfeed.com/carolynkylstra/silver-linings-are-real) that talks about the silver lining theory.

According to researchers at NYU, the silver lining theory, in basic terms, means to develop a strength from a weakness. Finding a silver lining means to find something positive about yourself that originally develops from one of these weaknesses that you have. I think this is an amazing theory that applies to every single human being out there (hey maybe even some animals too!). It just takes a little determination and believing in yourself in order to find your own silver lining.

Think about your biggest weakness. What does this weakness prevent you from doing? What does this weakness help you do? Now, you might be wondering how in the world a weakness can help you do anything in life, but I believe that you can find at least one positive that can come out of it. By doing so, you will be able to change your outlook on life and the way you look at yourself as well. This will allow you to live a happier and more satisfying life.

Think about the movie Silver Linings Playbook (the movie starring the ever so dashing Bradley Cooper and super spunky Jennifer Lawrence). The main character, Pat (played by Cooper), has bipolar disorder, which has negatively affected his life. He claims to have caught his wife cheating on him, and he also had to experience some other events that tore him down. But the after effect of these events prove that it’s possible to find a silver lining. He did everything he could to keep pushing through to find the positives that lay within those terrible times. His extreme situations reflect that no matter what you’re going through, it’s always possible to discover something great out of something bad. The silver lining, people!

When I read about this silver lining theory, I decided to think about it as compared to my own life. One of my weaknesses is getting overly stressed when I have too much on my plate. While I see this as a negative trait, I realize that it can also translate to the fact that I’m a hard worker and will never give up when work is given to me. Through that realization, I came to find how easy it was to find my silver lining and I would definitely apply this theory to any other weaknesses that I may have.

Like I said, anyone and everyone can find their own silver lining(s). Think about it outside the box first; take a dark room, for example. The negatives of a dark room are that it’s impossible to see anything, and it’s essentially useless because you cannot get anything done in a dark room. So what is the silver lining? Well, you need the room to be dark in order to fall asleep at night, so there’s a helpful aspect! Also, a dark room (usually) contains a light switch, in which, with the flick of a finger, you can instantly light up the whole room; an instant gratification received through an unfavorable situation.

So think about the different ways you can transform your negative thoughts into positive ones. If your greatest weakness is being too emotional, it means your strength is having a big heart. If your biggest flaw is spacing out and daydreaming when someone is trying to talk to you, your great feature is that you’re a big dreamer. Apply this theory to your own life and I promise you that you will find your own light switch even in your darkest of times.

Why Everyone Should Listen To Taylor Swift’s Song “Clean”

Standard

Taylor Swift is known for writing songs about relationships and breakups, and many of her lyrics are extremely relatable. Some people aren’t fans of Swift simply because of the topics of her songs, but her song “Clean” from her latest album “1989” is a song that I believe everyone needs to listen to at least once.

“Clean”, which was co-written by Imogen Heap, can be interpreted in many different ways depending on your personal situations. I believe that its original meaning has to do with getting over a breakup. It reflects losing someone, yet finding yourself through it all.

This song has beautiful lyrics and metaphors throughout which create strong visual images in the mind and a whole string of emotions. I want to go through some of the lyrics just to show you how on point this song can be with anyone’s life.

The song starts out like most breakups do: “You’re still all over me like a wine-stained dress I can’t wear anymore; Hung my head as I lost the war; And the sky turned black like a perfect storm.” Using the beautiful metaphor of a “wine-stained dress”, Swift sings about the moment after a breakup where you cannot stop thinking about your ex/you can’t seem to get over him/her. In these lines, she explains the feeling of a breakup as being very dark and empty.

The chorus is a basic summary of the whole process of getting through a breakup: “Rain came pouring down; When I was drowning, that’s when I could finally breathe; And by morning, gone was any trace of you; I think I am finally clean.” Swift uses the metaphor of rain as the emotional breakdown that one goes through during a breakup. “When I was drowning, that’s when I could finally breathe”, is an ironic statement that reflects finding oneself when all hope is lost. The second half of the chorus emulates the moment when you’re finally over a breakup and you feel like a new person.

Another line that stands out is: “So I punched a hole in the roof; Let the flood carry away all my pictures of you.” This is a metaphorical representation of letting go all of the memories of your ex that are haunting you and holding you back. This could also be a literal interpretation of getting rid of photos of your ex.

In another part of the song, she sings, “10 months sober, I must admit; Just because you’re clean, don’t mean you don’t miss it; 10  months older, I won’t give in; Now that I’m clean, I’m never gonna risk it.” These lines are a common feeling amongst anyone who has gone through a breakup; you miss your ex sometimes but you know that it’s best to not go down that road again because you’re better off without him/her.

As I said, you can interpret this song in different ways to relate it to your own life, but I believe that this song shows the positive after effects of a breakup or a hard time, which is something we can all learn from. It’s important to realize that you can find the light even in the darkest times.

Is The Glass Half-Full or Half-Empty?

Standard

When asked the question “Is the glass half full or half empty?”, many would agree that optimists say the glass is half full. I like to say that the glass is always full. When dealing with technicalities,   the glass is half filled with water, and half filled with air; there is no room for “nothingness” in the glass.

Metaphorically relating this to life, I interpret this as “life is always filled with positivity”. I believe that there is always something positive that a person can find in their life, but they have to make the choice to find it. It’s important to seek out these positives because otherwise you’ll live your whole life going down the rollercoaster, rather than going up.

When going through a rough time in life, most people just want to give up because they’ve lost all hope. But what they don’t realize is that there is always hope as long as you believe there is. There’s never a valid excuse for someone to give up when life suddenly becomes a little darker. Put some damn batteries in your flashlight and find your way out!

Happiness is something that we all want most in life, yet some people don’t even try to achieve it. I feel as if those people are just afraid to fall down even more along the way, so they don’t bother to change their life. But it’s important to do things that you’re afraid of because otherwise you will never amount to anything. So just wake up and say, “I’m going to push all my fears behind me and begin my journey to happiness!”

Positivity and happiness are not overrated. They are two things that people need in order to live a healthy life. So if you want to be healthy and happy, absolutely nothing is stopping you except for yourself! You have to make the first move and you have to make the decision to be positive.
