10 Things You Learn In College Outside The Classroom

Standard

College is first seen as a time of studying hard and working towards a career. While this is accurate, the overall college experience gives people the opportunity to learn more than just what they read in textbooks. College students learn all these extra little things without even realizing it. Here are some of the things that they learn:

1. How to find true friends. This lesson usually doesn’t come right off the bat because when you’re starting out as a freshman, everyone is new and everyone wants to hang out. But over the years, you come to find who is truly your friend and who is not. College allows you to differentiate between a true friend and a fake friend, which is something that develops with time.

2. How to have a stable relationship. College relationships are way more serious than they are in high school. If you go through some crappy relationships during college, you are able to learn what you can do differently in future relationships in order to make them more stable. If you have secured yourself in a serious relationship in college, you learn how to maintain it, and throughout the relationship, you learn how to make it better. College is a time for maturing, and understanding how to resolve conflict with others.

3. How to have fun. Even though you have to be serious when it comes to classwork, college is a time for going out and doing fun things. You learn that it’s perfectly okay to give yourself a break once in awhile, because having fun is a crucial part of life.

4. How to take care of yourself. This refers to many different aspects of taking care of yourself, from learning how to essentially live on your own, to eating well and exercising. Usually freshman year, you don’t care much about eating healthy and getting enough sleep, but over the years you realize how important these things are.

5. How to be responsible. Responsibility is a huge part of college because not only are you responsible for getting your homework done in time, but you also have outside responsibilities that come along with your independence. As more responsibilities get thrown on you throughout the years, you learn how to be a more organized individual.

6. How to work with others. You’ve been taught at a young age how to work with others, but it really sinks in during college. This is mainly because you get stuck doing group projects and working with people who you might not get along with. Being put in situations like these allow you to become more mature, and learn how to work with people who are different from you.

7. How to try new things. College is a time where new opportunities fly at you from every angle. Being in a new place on your own allows you to branch out a bit more than you’re used to. This is a good thing because it opens you up to new interests and new things that you might have never even tried before.

8. How to ask for help. During your college years, you come to realize that it’s perfectly okay to ask for help when you’re lost or confused. This can range from getting help on schoolwork to getting help with personal problems. This is something you learn because you’re maturing and realizing that getting help isn’t a bad thing, it’s only another thing that contributes to your growth.

9. How to be involved. Colleges have so many different organizations that you’re bound to have found at least one that you belong to. This involvement gives you some experiences that you might not have had without college. It also helps you meet new people who are interested in similar things to you, and sometimes these people can become your life-long friends.

10. How to find yourself. Essentially, college is the time in your life where you find out what you want to do in your future. With that, comes finding yourself. During college, you’ll sometimes lose yourself during your journey, and you might not have even completely found yourself by the time you graduate. But this doesn’t mean that you will never find yourself. You can take everything you’ve learned in college and apply it to your life, while continuing on your journey after graduation.

Taylor Swift Songs That Will Put You In A Good Mood

Standard

Taylor Swift is the queen of angry and sad breakup songs, but she is also wonderful at releasing songs dealing with new beginnings and positivity. I decided to look through all the Taylor songs that I own (a lot of songs….like over 100!) and post the ones that I feel best give off an upbeat/positive vibe. Whether you’re a fan of hers or not, at least take a listen to some of these:

Begin Again:

Begin Again is all about starting a new relationship after you’ve been trying to move on from your ex. It reflects the wonderful feelings you can get once you let go and try something new with someone else.

Hey Stephen:

Hey Stephen is a song that you would totally sing to that cute boy you have a crush on. He may have all these girls pining after him but hey, you’re totally positive that you’re the one for him.

Change:

Change is a great song because you can relate it to almost anything you’re going through. If you’re going through a rough time just know that “these things will change” and times will get better.

Fearless:

Fearless is another song about starting new with someone. Being “fearless” with someone means to let go and dive in and see how wonderful it can be.

Jump Then Fall:

Jump Then Fall reflects a song about liking a guy and telling him that he doesn’t have to be afraid of any consequences of falling for you. This can also reflect the idea that you shouldn’t be afraid of falling for someone just because you’re afraid of getting hurt. You just go for it and see what happens!

22:

22 is a great song to dance to with your friends because it’s all about having fun and not having a care in the world. This song is especially awesome to jam out to if you’re a single lady because it’ll make you just want to appreciate your life and not worry about anything.

We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together:

We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is a wonderful song for someone who has recently gone through a breakup and is like, soo done. Not only is it a fun song to dance to, but it’s one of those breakup songs that doesn’t make you want to cry, but instead makes you smile and sing a long.

Everything Has Changed:

Everything Has Changed not only features the beautiful voice of Ed Sheeran, but it also contains lyrics about finding someone new. It marks those first feelings you have when you start to fall for someone and how amazing it truly is.

Mean:

Mean is a song you can jam out to when you want to tell the haters what’s up. It reflects the fact that there are going to be people out there who may not like you or appreciate you, but you shouldn’t care because you are going to do great things in life, while those people waste their time putting you down.

Long Live:

Long Live can be interpreted in many different ways, but I feel like it has an overall vibe to it. Taylor wrote it specifically about her fans, and how grateful she is for all the experiences she has had going on tour and becoming successful with her music. It just has a great feel to it and can instantly brighten your mood.

Sweeter Than Fiction:

Sweeter Than Fiction was a song that Taylor wrote for a movie, and isn’t very well known by everyone, but I still think it’s an amazing song. It’s about someone who struggles to find someone to believe in them, and keeps on failing at what they’re trying to pursue, but should keep on trying, because eventually they’ll make it. It’s a great motivational song for anyone who is trying to work hard towards something.

Shake It Off:

Shake It Off is not only a fun song to dance around your room to, but it also just makes you feel good in general. It’s basically about not caring what the haters (or anyone) thinks of you because you know you’re awesome. Just shake it off!

Blank Space:

Blank Space is a fun song because in it, Taylor is essentially making fun of herself for being known as a serial dater, and she is telling the next guy that she’ll add his name to her list of ex lovers. Whether you relate to this insanity or not, it’s a great song to listen to when you want to just sing and be in a better mood.

20 Kind Things You Can Do For Others

Standard

1. Pay for someone else’s meal/drink.

Whether you’re in a Starbucks drive-thru or a sit-down restaurant, tell the staff that you want to pay for another person’s order. The term “pay it forward” can come into play here :).

2. Volunteer.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen, or a children’s hospital, or any other organization that gives back. Not only will you make others feel better, but you’ll feel pretty great doing it!

3. Hide some money somewhere in a store.

It doesn’t have to be hundreds of dollars, especially if you’re short on money these days. Even leaving just a few dollars somewhere can bring some excitement and joy to someone’s day.

4. Attach money to a vending machine with a kind note.

Leave enough money for someone to make a purchase and attach a short note saying something like, “Buy something sweet, on me!” Again, this small gesture can make someone’s day.

5. Pay someone with a compliment.

If you really need to save money, you can pay someone in a different way: with a compliment! Let’s say you’re waiting in line at a store. Say something nice to the person in front of you or behind you. Even the smallest compliment can make someone feel amazing.

6. Donate to an organization.

There are so many great organizations out there, so pick one that’s close to your heart and donate! Even just a small donation still makes a difference.

7. Help an elderly person (or anyone) carry groceries to his/her car.

If you see someone struggling to get groceries to his/her car, offer to help them out! As long as you don’t ask in a creepy way, chances are, they’ll be grateful for your help!

8. Give coffee to a homeless person.

Unfortunately, these days it’s sometimes hard to trust a homeless person with your money because there are some scammers out there. It’s a sad fact, but we know that it’s true. So instead, go to the nearest coffee shop and buy a coffee or hot chocolate for them. It’s an especially nice gesture for a cold winter day.

9. Write a nice note and leave it in a random book at the library.

It could be a random book, or maybe it could be your favorite book. Come up with something wonderful to write and stick it in a random page. Chances are, you won’t get to see a person’s reaction to it, but just the thought of it will bring you joy.

10. Leave a sweet note on a random person’s car.

Again, you might not get to see the person’s reaction to it, but it’s something incredibly kind and unexpected.

11. Make conversation with a store clerk (if it’s a slow day!).

It doesn’t even have to be a full-length conversation, just ask them how their day is going, or how long they’ve been working there. Friendliness is easily passed around :).

12. Resolve a past conflict.

This sounds like a large task but it doesn’t have to be that difficult. It’s not worth it going through life with enemies. Figure out a way to solve a past conflict with someone, and you’ll feel so much better. You don’t have to become friends with that person, but at least just agree to be civil. You’ll feel a whole lot of satisfaction!

13. Give out free hugs.

This one sounds silly, but I always thought it was a cute idea. I’ve seen YouTube videos of people who wear a shirt or hold a sign that says “Free Hugs”, and they stand in the middle of their campus, or somewhere else in their town. I think it’s a great idea because let’s face it, everyone needs a hug! A hug a day keeps the negativity away!

14. Have a free lemonade and/or cookie stand (or hot chocolate in the winter).

I know you like to make profit, but if you give out free food and drinks, it can make people have a better day! This simple task can bring a smile to at least one person’s face.

15. Offer to help tutor a classmate for free.

Let’s face it, college kids are notoriously broke, yet they also want to do well in school. If you have time, and you would consider yourself well-rounded in that class, offer assistance to a struggling classmate. It will make them feel more confident, and hey, maybe you’ll make a new friend in the process!

16. Make a purchase at Goodwill/Salvation Army/another resale shop.

Make sure you understand the cause before you go to the store, so that way you know what your money is going towards.

17. Go around your campus or around your town telling people genuine compliments.

Again, I got this idea from YouTube, and it’s a bit more time-consuming than other things on this list, but the reactions you’ll get from others is priceless.

18. Donate old clothes/other items.

Instead of just throwing out clothes that don’t fit anymore, donate them to an organization that gives them to people in need. It’s a much better option knowing that someone else will get use out of your unwanted things.

19. Gather up some friends and clean up your favorite local park (or other areas!).

Being kind to the environment ultimately helps you be kind to others because a clean environment = healthier, happier people.

20. Bake something tasty for your neighbors.

Whether you are best friends with your neighbors, or complete strangers, surprising them with baked goods is a great way to brighten their day! Maybe they’ll even invite you over to eat some of your treats with them!

7 YouTubers That Are Inspirational

Standard

1. ShayCarl

Not only is Shay always positive and upbeat, but he also is living proof that hard work can truly pay off. His passion for video production has brought him into a very successful life. He shows us that it’s important to work towards your dreams and never give up. He also embodies the importance of family, as well as living life to the fullest. If more people in this world were like Shay, I can’t even begin to imagine how much happier this world would be.

2. Shane Dawson

Shane’s humor may not be for everyone, but he truly is an inspirational person. He has spoken many times about his struggles from his teenage years and how he overcame them/is still overcoming them. He has faced a lot of body image issues in his life, and he likes to take time out to talk about it in his vlogs, in hopes of helping others who may have similar problems. He also has worked hard to live out his dreams. He even recently released a movie that he directed and produced, which has been a long time dream of his.

3. Jenna Marbles

Jenna may be the funniest chick on YouTube, but she is also a huge inspiration. She always reflects that she doesn’t care what people think about her, and that she will always be herself no matter what. She has been through a struggle of figuring out what she wants to do in life, and even said that she still isn’t sure, but she continues to make YouTube videos because it’s the one thing that she truly loves to do right now. She shows how important it is to do what you love and go for what you want.

4. Tyler Oakley

Tyler is always a smiling ray of sunshine in all his videos, which brings positivity to everyone. Like Jenna, he isn’t afraid to just be himself and doesn’t care if people don’t like him. His main goal is to make people smile and laugh at his videos, and to show people that it’s completely okay to be different. He loves to make people’s days better because he believes that everyone should stay positive.

5. Connor Franta

Connor likes to make a lot of relatable videos in order to make people feel better. He also enjoys making people smile and laugh and likes to assure people that they’re not alone in any issue they are facing. He is completely real with people which reflects that he loves himself for who he is. He wants others to know that they should feel the same, no matter how different they are from others. He really is a great role model for people of all ages because he always speaks the truth.

6. Lisa Schwartz

Like her boyfriend, Shane Dawson, she also mainly makes goofy and funny videos, but there’s something beneath the surface that makes Lisa inspirational. Every once in awhile, she will make a serious video just talking to her audience about the problems that she has had to overcome in her life. She recently talked about her anxiety attacks and how she is still struggling. But she also said that it’s important to believe in yourself and believe that you can get through anything. Through her humor, she shows that it’s important to look at life in a positive light and keep pushing through no matter what.

7. Charles Trippy

Charles is a lot like ShayCarl in a sense, that he makes daily vlogs and always likes to stay upbeat and positive. He has overcome many huge obstacles in his life, and he has shown that you can only overcome these things if you never give up. He even had a brain tumor, which put a huge toll on his life, but he stayed positive through it all, and eventually overcame it. He also had to deal with a divorce from his wife, but again, he stayed positive and found a way to move on. He is another person on YouTube who is very real with his viewers because he wants them to know that they can get through anything as well.

Quote Of The Day:

10 Underrated People Whom We Should Appreciate More

Standard

1. Nice people in traffic.

You know that lovely moment when you’re trying to switch lanes and then FINALLY that one nice person lets you in? It’s people like that, that I am thankful for. It’s important to always give that friendly traffic wave to them right after they let you in, otherwise you’re giving them the cold shoulder and they’ll come back for revenge (okay, maybe I’m exaggerating, but seriously, be nice back to them!). Also, be sure to pay it forward by letting someone go in front of you in traffic at least once in awhile. They’ll appreciate you and you’ll feel great when they give you that ever-so underrated wave.

2. Friendly cashiers.

It always makes me feel better about the world when a cashier at a store is extremely friendly and upbeat. It makes me realize that there are great people in this world, no matter what their circumstances are. And if you come across a not so friendly cashier who isn’t smiling (which, trust me, I’ve come across some of those), try to be the better person and make their day better. Be extra friendly to them, and smile a lot, and maybe even give them a compliment! It can be something small, like “hey, I love your shirt!” (unless they’re wearing a uniformed work shirt which would be kind of weird if you complimented that). You could just possibly make them feel better and improve their day!

3. Tollbooth attendants.

We don’t think much about those people on the tollways who sit in their booths taking money from cars, one after another. The next time you stop at a tollbooth, be overly friendly to them! I know you have a very short amount of time to say anything, but in that little time, even just a big smile can make them feel more appreciated in life.

4. Plumbers.

I’m sure most of us do appreciate plumbers when we have extreme issues going on in our plumbing systems, but I feel like they deserve even more credit. It’s a rough job, and a lot of times a gross job, and we wouldn’t really be able to function without them. I give them a LOT of credit for what they do because I know that I could never do their job. Plumbers are awesome and we must appreciate them more!

5. Busboys.

I feel like busboys always get ignored. You know when a busboy is cleaning your table before and after your meal? A lot of people kind of just continue their conversations amongst themselves instead of acknowledging the busboy, which I think is pretty rude. Make conversation with them; I’m willing to bet that it will make them feel a million times more appreciated. Also be sure to ALWAYS say thank you after they’re done cleaning because their job can’t always be easy either.

6. Movie theater ushers.

I used to be a movie theater usher and I can tell you that it’s no where near easy. People always leave their trash everywhere in the theaters, and it was somewhat disgusting most of the time. I also always had to rush around from theater to theater during busy times, which doesn’t feel that great! So please appreciate the ushers for cleaning up the theaters before your movie, because otherwise you would be surrounded by garbage and that would just be gross! Also highly consider taking your trash with you to throw out after the movie as a sign of respect to the hardworking ushers.

7. Mall cops.

Movies like “Mall Cop” make us want to make fun of this profession because they tend to zoom around on their segways and we treat them as a joke a lot of the time. But all in all, their goal is to protect us. Without them, if something terrible happened at the mall, we would be screwed. So please don’t treat them as a joke. In fact, the next time you see a mall cop, you should definitely take the time to at least say hello to them. It will make them feel less ignored and it will definitely brighten their day!

8. TV/Film editors.

Most of the time when we watch movies or TV shows, we think about the actors, directors, and writers. But a lot of people don’t take the time to think about the editors. From personal experience, I can tell you that editing takes a lot of time, patience, and creativity. Sure, there wouldn’t be a movie or show without the actors, but then again, if there were no editors, it would be an extremely boring thing to watch. Please appreciate the editing skills in the next thing you watch, because again, it took a lot of time and effort for that editor to do his/her job.

9. Mall kiosk workers.

I know, I know, these are the people we tend to ignore and sometimes they simply annoy us, but I have to give them credit. Why? Because despite being aware that people don’t want to be bothered, they still put themselves out there in order to try to run their business. It must be tough for them because they’re trying to make money and everyone (well, most people) is being rude to them. I’m not trying to guilt-trip you into stopping at every mall kiosk, but I am saying that if you’re not interested in what they’re selling, you should be nicer about it. Instead of just giving them a look and walking away, say something like, “No thank you, I’m not interested.” If you’re nicer about it, they won’t feel like they were just slapped in the face.

10. Librarians.

Now we may not appreciate librarians that much because we think their job is easy and they work in a low-stress environment. While they might be lucky doing what they love, they are still doing a job that serves people. They make sure that the public is happy and they help out when needed. Who else can help you find that book that you need to do important research with? Don’t underestimate the amount of work that they do to help you; they are great people!

7 Reasons Why Shay Carl Is An Inspiration

Standard

You might know him as that crazy, energetic guy on YouTube with his family known as “The Shaytards”, but what you may not know is his backstory and other elements of his persona that make him truly inspirational.

1. He has worked his way past tough times. When Shay and his wife, Colette, were first starting out their family, times were really hard. They were in debt, and Shay was struggling to help his family survive. He worked extremely hard and was eventually able to get out of debt to support his growing family. Before he knew it, he was doing what he loved (making YouTube videos) and he even co-founded Maker Studios (who was then bought by Disney!). This just shows how strong of a person he is, simply by how he never gave up.

2. He values the importance of family. Shay records the daily life of him and his family because he likes to capture the memories and share it with the world. He always spends as much time as he can with his wife and children, because he understands how vital that time is. He always makes an effort to experience new adventures with his family because he wants to open his children up to the world and allow them to live life to the fullest.

3. He is always positive and upbeat. Through his vlogs, one can tell that Shay has a very energetic and loud personality, which reflects his way of approaching life. He constantly takes time to talk about important life lessons and looking on the bright side of things, which is what he tries to do with his own life. His emphasized smiles and his crazy laughter and shenanigans show people that you don’t have to take life so seriously all the time and that it’s a good thing to have some fun!

4. He is truly passionate about what he does. You can tell how much he loves producing videos and the fact that his family is involved just makes him love it even more. He always talks about how much he enjoys his career and how grateful he is to have a job that he thoroughly enjoys. His creative soul shines through all the time, which allows him to inspire others to find an outlet in which they can express themselves.

5. He is very adventurous. Shay is always trying new and exciting things and he is a huge believer in doing things that scare you. He proves to everyone that life is a lot more satisfying if you put yourself out there and try not to hold back from doing anything. I’m fairly certain that he would try anything once, which just reflects how blissfully crazy he is.

6. He is extremely determined. This quality especially shines through when it comes to his weight loss and fitness goals. If you watch early Shaytards videos, you can tell how much weight Shay has lost from that point up until now. He even has a separate YouTube channel called Shayloss which documents his fitness journey. He has even participated in several marathons, which at one point, he never even thought would be possible for him, yet he worked his way up to that point through determination. He keeps his determination streak going on this weight loss journey and continues to strive and work his way to the top.

7. He genuinely cares about others. Whether it be fulfilling a Make a Wish dream of meeting him and his family, or just simply acknowledging his appreciation for his fans, Shay has a heart that is big enough to go around the entire world. He not only encourages his children to follow their dreams and goals, but he encourages all of his viewers to do so as well. He sees the good in everyone, which makes him a well-rounded human being. This also makes him a great role model for people of all ages because he knows the value of treating others with respect.
